Sweetness, I was only joking when I said…

The Smiths are 30 today. I know… some of you are going to do the default reaction and go on about ‘how depressing they are…’ Really, just get over it and actually listen to them, to the music. Even without Morrisey’s lyrics, Johnny Marr’s guitar parts are incredible. And I defy you not to crack a smile at Big Mouth Strikes Again or The Queen is Dead. A brilliant band – totally unique.

  1. Thanks Kester. I read your tweet and immediately put on Hatful of Hallow. I never understand when people say they don’t like Morrissey’s voice or that they’re too depressing etc. The interplay between the guitar and vocals on ‘Still Ill’, the arpeggio intro to ‘Girl Afraid’, the line ‘to gravely read the stones’ on ‘Cemetry Gates’, just wonderful! I live in hope that our vicar with place some Mothering Sunday daffodils in his back pocket on Sunday in tribute…

  2. And dons a tutu as well, surely?! Or is that too much to hope for. The campaign to get vicars to wear tutus in a mass Smiths tribute this Sunday begins here!

  3. I’ll do it!! It’ll match my beard wonderfully.

  4. Queen is dead tour Brixton Academy, 12th December 1986. As it turned out the last time they were on stage together. I can remember that gig like it was yesterday. The thirty year thing though has made me feel really rather old which of course I am. Nice to have you back writing.

  5. You know what – I was meant to be at that gig!! Gutted beyond anything that I didn’t make it. Such a good band.
